iBalance Exercise Tips

Exercise is an important component of a balanced healthy lifestyle. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is among the many benefits of physical activity, as is lowering your risk of chronic disease, and improving self-esteem and well-being. A regular exercise program should include cardiorespiratory, resistance, flexibility, neuromotor training, and movement throughout the day. Myofascial release and massage may be helpful to reduce stiffness and/or pain.

In order to achieve the important health benefits, experts recommend adults include a weekly balanced exercise program that includes…

  • at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of moderate intensity cardiorespiratory activity; this includes walking, running and bicycling
  • 2-3 sessions of weight training, where each of the 7 major muscle groups are worked in 2-4 sets with 8-12 reps per set
  • 2-3 sessions of flexibility (for flexibility and range of motion) and neuromotor training (for balance); try yoga, tai chi or simple exercise ball activities
  • daily movement throughout the day

It is important to start any exercise program slowly and increase your activity gradually to reduce soreness and injury. It does not require a gym membership to get the daily amount of required physical activity. Remember, some physical activity is better than none — just start moving and have fun!
